Common Causes of Electrical Fires Common Causes of Electrical Fires Electrical fires are often caused by old wiring, damaged appliances and the overuse of extension leads. Every year, over half of accidental house fires in the UK are electricity related.
This month’s blog at DBF Electrical (Chelt) Ltd looks at the common causes of electrical fires. For more details, call us in Gloucestershire on 01242 578623 .
Faulty Sockets & Appliances The majority of electrical fires are caused by faulty plug sockets and old appliances. Appliances with worn cords should not be used. This is because they can send heat onto combustible surfaces, which can cause a fire.
Faulty sockets and outlets that have not been updated are likely to create a spark and cause a fire. These need to be regularly inspected and updated by professionals if they are worn or damaged.
Portable Heaters People often put portable heaters too close to combustible surfaces. Coil heaters are especially dangerous. This is because the coils can become so hot, they will almost instantly ignite.
If you need to use a portable heater, portable radiators are the safest option. These are less likely to ignite flammable objects but should still be kept away from them.
Circuit Overload Most homes are over 20 years old. Therefore, they do not have enough outlets for your equipment and technology. If this is the case, you more than likely use extension leads. This is okay as a temporary measure, but they can overheat and potentially cause a fire.
This issue can be solved by installing extra wall sockets, so you no longer need extension cables.
Light Fixtures Lamps, light bulbs and fixtures are another common cause of electrical fires. Installing bulbs with a wattage too high for the lamp can be dangerous. It is important to check the maximum recommended bulb wattage on any lamp or fixture.
Another issue is covering a lampshade with cloth. This can cause the material to heat up and ignite.
